Neurological screenings are important during a complete physical examination, or if there is any reason to think there may be an underlying problem in an individual.
Nervous system disorders and mental health disorders may have similar symptoms, and some behavioral symptoms can be signs of a nervous system disorder. Damage to the nervous system can cause problems in daily functioning. Specialized imaging methods can visualize changes in brain activity or the levels of particular brain chemicals.
A neurological screening assesses motor and sensory skills, hearing and speech, vision, coordination, and balance. It also tests mental status, mood, and behavior.
During the exam, different functions of the nervous system are tested, including:
- Mental status
- Coordination and balance
- Reflexes
- Sensory functions
- Cranial nerves
- Autonomic nervous system
A complete neurological exam may be done during a routine physical examination, following any type of trauma, and/or if the individual has any of the following complaints:
- Headaches
- Blurry vision
- Behavioral changes
- Fatigue
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Injury to the head, neck, or back
- Weakness
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- Decreased movement of the arms or legs
